Surfwear
It
was back around 1997 when I
started thinking about a logo that
could be marketed. At that time Tommy Hilfiger was selling
everywhere. You could not go out in public anywhere without
seeing someone in Tommy jeans or a shirt. It made me think
this guy, Tommy, was making money every time someone purchased
something with his name on it.
Nike
was also big at the time. The funny thing is, their logo looks
like nothing but a check mark. Nothing cool or eye catching
at all. The catch is that they made it cool. They made a good
sneaker and hired the best sports figures to represent the
company. Every kid who wanted a pair of Nikes wanted them
because they were cool. They could possibly become cool. Nike's
sales are in the billions, and it's still a check
mark!
So I figured that if I could develop a logo, put it on clothes,
hats, or anything, then I could do the same thing. But it
had to be cool.
Well, the possibilities were endless. First, what type of
clothes were we going to market. Beach clothes. Is there any
better place to be? I thought of the name SCOTTYP. It had
a ring to it. But how could it be a logo? I was traveling
behind a fish truck one day and they had a shark on the back
of the truck and I remember looking at that shark and thinking,
what a perfect fit. That night after a few drinks at happy
hour and powered by Budweiser I drew the first SCOTTYP shark.
That first drawing became U.S. trademark #2,174,638 registered
July 21 1998. The motto of SCOTTYP is "ALWAYS MOVING
ALWAYS FEEDING" which is a tribute to not only the shark
but the entrepreneurs who have an idea and act upon it. The
only reason an idea is crazy to someone is because they have
never heard of anyone doing it. If Nike can market and sell
a check mark, you can market and sell anything...
Just make it look cool! THANKS ScottyP
